Dr. Fokke Gerritsen studied Near Eastern and Northwest European Archaeology at the University of Amsterdam and the University of Chicago. He received his PhD degree from VU University Amsterdam in 2001. His dissertation was awarded the Praemium Erasmianum Research Prize in 2003. Between 2005 and 2010 Fokke Gerritsen was member of the then newly founded De Jonge Akademie, part of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences.
In 2006 he took up the post of local director of the Netherlands Institute in Turkey, while continuing to lecture part-time at VU University Amsterdam. He participated in and directed fieldwork projects in Turkey, Syria and the Netherlands. Since 2007 he directs the Barcın Höyük Excavations Project.
