You are invited to the photo exhibition Through the Lens Emilie Haspels: The Phrygian Highlands 1937-1958 [Emilie Haspels'in Gözünden: Dağlık Frigya 1937-1958] at the Eti Archaeology Museum in Eskişehir between 28 February - 28 March 2025.
The Dutch archaeologist Emilie Haspels (1894-1980) was a pioneer of Phrygian archaeology. Between 1937 and 1958, she led excavations at Yazılıkaya and documented archaeological monuments throughout the Phrygian Highlands between Eskişehir, Kütahya and Afyonkarahisar. She was also the first female professor of archaeology at a Dutch university and Director of the Allard Pierson Museum in Amsterdam.
The exhibition Through the Lens of Emilie Haspels shows photos, mostly taken by Haspels herself. They document her archaeological fieldwork and daily life during her expeditions. They also show the villages where she stayed and the villagers who welcomed her into their homes.
The exhibition is bilingual, in Turkish and in English. It is curated by Charlie Smid and Wolter Braamhorst, coordinated by Fokke Gerritsen and Eray Ergeç, exhibition designed by Melisa Tez, research done by Pleuntje van Lieshout, and translated by Aysel Arslan and Gülşah Günata. The exhibition was developed by the Netherlands Institute in Turkey, the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Turkiye, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, and the Allard Pierson Museum.
